Broken Beach or locally known as Pasih Uug by local residents, is a 200-meter high rock cliff jutting into the ocean. This cliff has been exposed to seawater abrasion for centuries, so a giant cave-like hole naturally formed in the middle. The water trapped in the middle of this cliff comes from sea water that enters the hole or tunnel in the cliff.
Once visitors arrive at one side of the cliff, they can take pictures with the background of bridge-like rock. Always be careful when stepping so as not to fall. Wear comfortable shoes for easy movement.
Even though this place is called a beach, this location does not have sand that you can use to play or run around. Here there are stretches of steep cliffs which are very challenging to explore.
The sea water is very clear and a bit bluish with calm waves. Visitors can clearly see turtles, manta rays, and various other marine life.
If they are are lucky, tourists can also see stingrays and dolphins from the top of the cliff. The dolphins come from Dolphin Beach which is not far from Broken Beach.
The hilly areas around the beach are overgrown with thick green grass and shrubs. They become green and thick when the rainy season arrives, and during the dry season, the condition of the areas around the beach will be quite barren, however, it is still beautiful when this view is combined with the expanse of blue sea and high cliffs around it.
The beach is currently always crowded with visitors and it is a mandatory tour stop in Nusa Penida although road access to the area is quite difficult. If you want a leisurely excursion, it is recommended to hire a guide.
To get to the Broken Beach, visitors can rent a motorbike or a car around Nusa Penida. It takes about 90 minutes to get there through a fairly rocky path. The path will give you a sensation of going off-road which is challenging. Nusa Penida is located in the Lombok Strait, about 15 kilometers off the southeast coast of Bali. Small ferries and speed boats depart daily from Padangbai, following a changeable schedule, while other speed boats connect Sanur Beach and Nusa Lembongan, as well as Nusa Penida.
